At Least One Structure Destroyed In Lower Granite Fire In Garfield County

At least one structure was destroyed in the Lower Granite Fire in Garfield County overnight.

Fire managers are trying to determine what type of structure burned.  The blaze has officially consumed about 2,000 acres but that number is expected to increase later today with better mapping.  Light rain continued to fall of the fire this morning.  Fire resources from a Northeastern Washington team has been assigned to the blaze.  At least one helicopter will be making water drops on the flames today.  Officials ask boaters to stay clear of the chopper when it is dipping into the Snake River.

The blaze broke out late Monday morning and sent smoke and ash into Moscow and Pullman from several miles away.  It burned into the Snake River Canyon on the Garfield County side across from Wawawai Landing and Granite Point in Whitman County.  The fire did not jump the river.  Mandatory evacuation orders for Garfield County North of Pomeroy have been lifted.

The blaze was initially called the Dan Fire.
