A 21-year-old woman has been sent to jail for starving to death two Siberian Huskies while she was living in Pullman.
Dorcas Wairera was living in Pullman when she received the two-year-old dogs from family members in Western Washington. The relatives sent her the huskies because their neighbors in Everett were complaining about the dogs barking. The family also hoped that the dogs would help Wairera with her mental health issues. Wairera was living at The Hills on Grand when she received the dogs. The family rented an apartment next to Wairera’s unit for the large dogs to reside. They sent dog food and toys to help Wairera care for the dogs. Whitman County Superior Court Judge Gary Libey was told during sentencing that the dogs starved to death. Pullman Police found the deceased dogs due to the smell that was coming from the unit. Wairera was charged last fall.
Wairera pleaded guilty to felony animal cruelty. Judge Libey agreed with the prosecution’s recommendation and sentenced Wairera on Friday to three months in jail and placed her on probation for a year. She must undergo a mental evaluation and comply with treatment recommendations.
