Environmental cleanup work is underway at the Port of Whitman County’s property in downtown St. John for Whitman Hospital and Medical Clinics new clinic.
The former St. John Inn Café property was once a gas station and has petroleum contamination. The former café building was demolished in March to prepare the property for cleanup and redevelopment. The cleanup will involve excavating the contaminated soil. The work is being funded through a $500,000 EPA Cleanup Grant.
The Port purchased the property in late 2024 after Whitman Hospital and Medical Clinics in Colfax approached the Port about acquiring and cleaning up the site for the new office.
