The former Associate Director of Alumni Relations at the University of Idaho Tim Helmke has been charged with 3 felonies involving the alleged misuse of public funds. The 49 year old has been charged with misusing public funds and 2 counts of forgery in Latah County Second District Court.
The case began in October when the UI informed Moscow Police of an internal audit finding that Helmke allegedly made suspicious purchases on his university credit card. Those purchases between April of 2019 and July of last year totaled nearly 3,000 dollars.
According to court documents Helmke misused public funds by making nearly a thousand dollars in purchases at a Moscow High School Bear Boosters Auction. Other alleged illegal purchases included spending nearly 600 dollars on season tickets for the Best of Broadway series in Spokane, over 500 dollars at the Moscow Chamber Auction and buying over 600 dollars in books.
The forgery counts involve allegations that Helmke falsified documents to hide the illegal spending.
Helmke’s job at the UI ended in October. He remains the President of the Moscow Chamber of Commerce Board.
Helmke made his initial appearance Monday in Latah County Second District Court in Moscow. He is scheduled to be arraigned next month.
