Work to restore the historic railcars at the Pullman Depot Heritage Center will restart this summer.
The project began last July and was paused. According to a recent post on the center’s Facebook page, a new contractor has been hired to restore the cars at the museum just North of downtown Pullman. The historic cars being restored are a 1946 Northern Pacific day coach and a 1978 Burlington Northern caboose. The work was initially set to be complete last fall. The new contractor will repaint the cars and replace the windows. The Whitman County Historical Society is accepting 1,000 dollar donations to sponsored one of the 36 new passenger car windows.
The railcar restoration is about a 225,000 dollar project. Several grants have been awarded to help fund the work. The funding has been allocated by the Port of Whitman County, Avista Foundation, National Railway Historical Society and the Amherst Rail Society. The railcar restoration is part of a larger project to improve the Pullman Depot Heritage Center. Over two million dollars have been raised for the total project in recent years.
