The Whitman County Historical Society has been selected to receive $258,500 in state funding to continue restoration of Pullman’s historic Northern Pacific railway depot.
The Heritage Capital Projects grant would support interior restoration at the Pullman Depot Heritage Center, located at 330 N. Grand Ave.
Planned work includes restoring the depot’s original plaster ceilings, terrazzo flooring, door and window woodwork, and ceramic brick wainscoting. The project would also renovate public restrooms and replace the building’s heating and cooling system.
Built in 1916, the Northern Pacific railway depot was purchased by the Whitman County Historical Society in 2018. A comprehensive restoration of the building began in 2022.
Two previous Heritage Capital Projects grants have supported exterior restoration work, including the roof system, masonry and original wood windows.
The latest grant is part of the proposed funding for the 2027-29 biennium and still requires approval by the Washington State Legislature. If approved, the grant would reimburse approximately one-third of the interior restoration project’s total cost. The remaining funding will need to come from donations.
The Whitman County Historical Society’s proposal ranked 16th among 62 applicants statewide.
