A Washington State University fraternity has lost its recognition for a year due to hazing and alcohol violations.
According to a new post on the WSU website, the cases involve the Sigma Chi house. Last August a new member of the fraternity was forced to carry an object at all times which WSU officials determined can create a fear of repercussions. Later in August the Sigma Chi’s co-hosted a party where a minor drank alcohol.
The Sigma Chi house will lose recognition for two semesters unless the fraternity completes all WSU issued sanctions by April 17th. Those sanction orders include hazing training for fraternity members. The Sigma Chi’s have also been placed on probation and must be alcohol free for a year.
Last April the same fraternity was placed on probation for reckless endangerment for chaining the house doors shut during a party. The Sigma Chi’s were sanctioned in the fall of 2023 for furnishing alcohol to minors.
WSU is required by state law to publicly report Greek Row conduct allegations online. The mandate is part of “Sam’s Law” which was crafted after the death of WSU student Sam Martinez who died in 2019 of alcohol poisoning following an Alpha Tau Omega party.
